Food for the Soul
Food for the Soul is a story about five girls who have just started university.
They love good food, enjoy spending time together, and work hard in school so they can fully enjoy the precious moments of student life.
Personal Thoughts
This is an Original Anime1 in the Slice of Life genre. Since only 3 episodes have aired so far, I will focus more on my first impressions instead of going deep into character development.
Though honestly, you probably should not expect major character development from a relaxing Slice of Life anime like this anyway.
As someone who enjoys calm and relatable stories, Food for the Soul left a really good first impression on me even with just the first 3 episodes.
Characters
In the first three episodes, we are introduced to four main characters:
-
Mako Kawai
Quiet and humble, but when food is involved, she completely changes. The serious look in Mako’s eyes whenever she talks about food was honestly very memorable to me. She tends to isolate herself because she is afraid of unfamiliar things. Mako also loves a mascot named Mokotaro and even collects merchandise of it.
-
Shinon Ogawa
The complete opposite of Mako. Shinon is outgoing, simple minded, and easy to approach. She says whatever is on her mind and makes friends easily. She used to attend elementary school with Mako and had the nickname “Oshinko”, though she clearly hates being called that now.
-
Tsutsuji Higa
A small girl who is not very active. Tsutsuji has a soft and calming voice. Considering her small body and weak stamina, it is understandable why she dislikes physical activity. She enjoys drinking energy drinks and can play the ukulele.
-
Kurea Furutachi
Hardworking, friendly, and open minded. Kurea works part time at a family restaurant, where she learned cooking skills and built strong stamina from serving customers all day.
The character that impressed me the most was probably Kurea Furutachi. She feels like the most mature and dependable member of the group. Even though Shinon is technically the club leader, her personality makes it hard to really see her as one. Because of that, Kurea often ends up guiding the group in many situations.
One moment that stood out to me was when Mako visited the family restaurant where Kurea works. Because of her shy personality, Mako hesitated while ordering food. When she realized the meal she wanted was sold out, Kurea immediately offered her own portion without hesitation. That small act of kindness genuinely left a strong impression on me.
Whenever the group hangs out together, Kurea is also the one keeping everyone connected. Without her, the group would probably split apart and go in different directions.
Personal Impression
My overall impression of this anime is that it feels very relaxing and fun to watch. Watching it honestly made me feel completely at ease, without stress or heavy emotions.
Sometimes, a simple and gentle anime like this is enough to make an exhausting day feel better.
Art

The art looks very polished and beautiful. I honestly do not have anything to complain about. The bright and soft colors create a very relaxing atmosphere.
The character expressions are lively and full of variety, making every scene feel more alive.
Overall, I am completely satisfied with the art style of this anime.
Final Thoughts

In the end, I really enjoyed this anime. It is not a story filled with deep philosophy or harsh reality. Instead, it simply celebrates the warm and ordinary moments of youth. Sometimes, living is simply about appreciating those small moments.
If you are having a tiring day, feeling bored, or just want something relaxing to pass the time, I think this anime is worth trying.
And if you do decide to watch it, I honestly hope you enjoy your time with these five lovable girls. Maybe you might even see a little bit of yourself in them.
